Kuwait Simplifies Family Visit Visa Laws: Suspends Salary Barrier and Travel Restrictions

Kuwait has simplified the process of bringing family members into the country. In a major policy update, authorities removed the minimum income requirement for family visit visa sponsors, expanded eligibility for relatives, and ended the rule that required visitors to arrive only on Kuwait Airways.

The Old Requirement: What It Was

Previously, residents needed to meet a salary threshold to sponsor family visits. This excluded many lower-income expatriates.

In addition, only close family members—typically spouses and children—were eligible. Visitors also had to fly exclusively with Kuwait Airways, limiting flexibility and affordability.

What Has Changed Under the New Visa Policy

According to officials, the updated family visit visa rules include three major changes:

1. No More Income Restriction

Any legal resident in Kuwait, regardless of salary, can now apply for a family visit visa.

2. Wider Family Eligibility

Expatriates may now invite blood relatives up to the fourth degree and in-laws up to the third degree. This includes uncles, aunts, siblings-in-law, and grandparents.

3. Additional Travel Options

Visitors are no longer limited to Kuwait Airways. They may travel by land, sea, or air with any carrier, offering greater flexibility and lower costs.

Why This Matters

These reforms make the system more practical and inclusive:

  • Easier for expatriates to reunite with relatives
  • Expanded travel options without airline restrictions
  • Stronger family connections through broader eligibility
  • A more welcoming approach for Kuwait’s large expatriate population

Other Important Visa Changes in Kuwait

Alongside the relaxed family visit rules, Kuwait has also introduced other updates:

  • Visa-on-Arrival for GCC Residents – Citizens or residents of GCC nations with valid permits can now obtain a visa upon arrival without pre-approval.
  • New Tourist Visa Categories – Four types of tourist visas have been introduced, based on passports, qualifications, or travel history.

These steps show Kuwait’s efforts to modernize its immigration system and prioritize family unity and mobility.

Conclusion

By eliminating salary restrictions, expanding eligibility, and lifting airline limitations, Kuwait has made family reunification more accessible for expatriates. These changes reflect a more inclusive and adaptable approach to immigration.
